The Rwanda GI project is implemented in 5 districts on the shores of the Kivu Lake, in Western Rwanda. It is structured around two components:

  • Component 1 aims at fostering the development, the understanding and the implementation of GIs in Rwanda at the national level through a national legal and institutional framework. The GI protection includes a IT traceability system, capacity building of the public and private sector, identification of potential GIs on coffee throughout Rwanda, and a marketing strategy for Rwanda's GIs products, particularly coffee.
  • Component 2 is meant to implement a pilot GI on coffee at selected sites in the Western Province of Rwanda (Kivu Belt). This component includes the elaboration of a qualitative map of coffee at the pilot site level, the characterization of the terroir (landscape, stakeholders), creation and operationalization of the GI management association, support to Small Producer Communities, and ultimately the development of technologies for a sustainable management and traceability of the GI, on long term.
